Tricopter Skyhook: Lessons in Creativity, Resilience, and Brotherhood
By Jeff Glass

“All children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.”—Pablo Picasso

The journey of creativity, resilience, and connection often intertwines with the lessons we learn from those who shape our lives. For me, this journey began in 1984, a year that marked my transformation into an artist and set the stage for the life I would later build. From formative experiences with an Army veteran to the lessons of camaraderie and invention, this narrative reflects the essence of growth, ingenuity, and the power of working together—symbolized by the groundbreaking Tricopter Skyhook.

The Foundation of Creativity: Lessons from an Army Veteran

It all started with a man in camouflage, fresh from his service in the Army. Though initially just another figure in my mother’s life, he brought a sense of stability and creativity that became foundational to my growth.

Together, we moved to the countryside, leaving behind the chaos of the city. With his tools and vision, this man transformed raw materials into masterpieces. I watched as he chiseled a grizzly bear from a tree and crafted art from lumps of clay. Each creation was a testament to the power of imagination and skill.

Through these experiences, I learned to:

  • Create from Nothing: Whether it was soapstone, cedar, or clay, I discovered how to transform raw materials into something meaningful.
  • Value Details: Sculpting taught me patience and the importance of precision.
  • Appreciate Simplicity: Life in the countryside was slow, deliberate, and fulfilling—free from the distractions of modern life.

Though his time in my life was brief, the lessons he imparted stayed with me. His creativity planted the seeds for my journey as an artist and entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurial Influence: My Grandfather’s Legacy

My grandfather, a Navy veteran turned successful entrepreneur, became a pivotal figure in my life. Starting as a milkman, he worked his way into construction and eventually founded his own staffing company for building inspections. He showed me the possibilities of working for oneself and instilled in me the entrepreneurial spirit.

I accompanied him to business meetings, learning to read blueprints and navigate professional conversations. While his world often felt cold and distant, his mentorship provided invaluable insights into resilience and independence.

Key lessons I learned from my grandfather include:

  • Adaptability: He easily transitioned careers, proving that reinvention is possible at any stage of life.
  • Entrepreneurship: Observing his business success gave me the confidence to pursue my ventures.
  • Resilience: His growth story, despite challenges, inspired me to persist in my journey.

The Brotherhood: Lifelong Connections at BCP

Though my family life was marked by instability, my time at Bellarmine College Preparatory (BCP) gave me something unshakable: brotherhood. The friendships I formed during those years remain a cornerstone of my life.

These men continue to be my support system as I navigate my forties. We have stood by each other through personal losses, career challenges, and family milestones. This brotherhood taught me:

  • The Power of Connection: True friendships withstand time and distance.
  • Collaboration: Like a well-oiled team, we’ve worked together to overcome life’s obstacles.
  • Loyalty: Our bonds are rooted in mutual respect and shared experiences.

The Innovation of the Tricopter Skyhook

The Tricopter Skyhook, invented by Navy aeronautical engineer Raymond Young, epitomizes the power of teamwork and ingenuity. This metal harness enables three helicopters to lift and transport heavy loads, such as tanks or bridge sections, by working in unison.

The Skyhook’s success lies in:

  • Collaboration: Three pilots must work together seamlessly to achieve their mission.
  • Strategic Design: The harness ensures the helicopters stay at an optimal distance while distributing weight evenly.
  • Resilience in Action: Whether rescuing stranded equipment or repositioning artillery, the Skyhook exemplifies the power of coordinated efforts.

Like the Skyhook, our lives and businesses thrive when we harness the collective strength of a team.

Applying the Lessons: Creativity and Collaboration in Business

Today, I channel the lessons of my past into my work as an artist and entrepreneur. Running an international branding and marketing agency, I’ve realized that no success is achieved in isolation. It takes collaboration, innovation, and a willingness to break through barriers.

1. Embracing Creativity

The artistic foundations I gained from my childhood now inform my work. Creativity is at the heart of everything I do, whether designing campaigns or solving business challenges.

2. Building Strong Teams

Like the Tricopter Skyhook, success requires a coordinated team effort. I’ve learned to surround myself with individuals who bring diverse skills and perspectives, enabling us to tackle challenges together.

3. Resilience and Adaptability

Life and business are filled with unexpected twists, but the lessons from my grandfather and BCP brothers have taught me to persevere.

The Takeaway: Strength in Unity and Innovation

The Tricopter Skyhook is more than a tool—it’s a metaphor for the strength found in collaboration. It reminds us that even the heaviest burdens can be lifted when we work together.

From the creative influence of an Army veteran to my grandfather’s entrepreneurial spirit and my BCP brothers’ unbreakable bonds, my journey has been defined by connection, resilience, and innovation.

Whether in art, business, or personal growth, we are all part of a more significant network, capable of achieving extraordinary things when we combine our efforts.

So, what can you build when you work with others? Like the Skyhook, the possibilities are limitless.

Explore the power of collaboration, creativity, and resilience in your own life. Together, we can lift, build, and create a future full of possibilities.
